The Huntington Theatre, Boston - Robert H. Kuehn, Jr. Award
The Huntington Theatre in Boston is a 2023 Robert H. Kuehn, Jr. Award recipient! Nearly a century old, Boston’s Huntington Theatre has been reimagined into a 21st century version of itself – inside and out. Providing an exciting new cultural destination, the new Huntington welcomes today’s diverse communities and engages a new generation of theatregoers. The building was designed by J. Williams Beal, Sons and constructed in 1925 as America’s first not-for-profit playhouse. Its proximity to Symphony Hall, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the old Boston Opera House was selected to signify its character as a major cultural institution of Boston as well as its difference from the commercial playhouses along Boylston, Washington, and Tremont streets.
The landmark theatre was restored in a way that acknowledges its historic past, but also reflects contemporary performing arts venue standards. This balance was achieved by reclaiming the special character of the original façade, embracing the unique character of the original auditorium, and weaving in new architecture and interiors that enable modern day social experiences and first-rate physical and technical support. Phase 1 of the Huntington’s renovation proves it is possible to renovate an existing building and achieve sustainability, accessibility, and a high caliber of design excellence. Now The Huntington Theatre Company has a beautiful, new home to share with the community.
Congratulations to The Huntington Theatre and the entire project team!
