MER Update: Support The Columns!
Updated: Oct 18, 2021
A special town meeting in Dennis on October 26 will determine the future of a proposed restoration of The Columns. The project is seeking Community Preservation Act funds which are awarded to projects for historic preservation, affordable housing, open space/conservation or recreation.
Background:
The Columns is an iconic part of West Dennis' heavily traveled Rt. 28 streetscape. This whaling captain's mansion makes a statement, with its two-story fluted columns that were transported all the way from Boston to mark the entry way to Captain Obed Bakers stately home. In the 1960's and 70's, the house became a popular restaurant and jazz club. The past few decades saw rehabilitation attempts in fits and starts, with nothing taking hold. Slowly deteriorating, the house was listed on Preservation Massachusetts 2018 list of Massachusetts Most Endangered Historic Resources (MER) list.
After listing, PM worked with local nominators to find a collaborative preservation solution, and were thrilled when 1620 Capital LLC expressed interest in the property. The company acquired the property in late 2019 with plans to restore and rehabilitate the house for rental housing.
