Statement of Solidarity
Like so many, we are struggling to come to terms with what we are witnessing across the United States. Words do not convey our sorrow and dismay at the events that have led us here, from the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis to the violent outbursts overshadowing the peaceful protests and causing damage to our communities that goes beyond shattered windows. We know that we, as a nation, are at a tipping point and this is a time where words must be followed by action and change.
Preservation Massachusetts stands in solidarity with those who speak out against racism in all forms. We have an obligation and commitment to equity and inclusivity in the places we are preserving and the stories we tell for future generations.
As preservationists, we work to preserve places in order to preserve our local and national history and tell the story of the people who came before us. We join fellow preservation organizations from across the state and country in acknowledging that our work is to tell a full and complete American story, even if it is hard, painful and difficult. By working through our difficult past, we work to create a more inclusive future. Our history is not a single story. We know, as a statewide preservation organization we must lead by example. We need to do better and we pledge to use our statewide mission and platform to do that. We are here to listen and to learn, in order to be a better partner for every community in Massachusetts. We are here with you and for you.
